THE FOUNDATION

What is Panchakarma?

Panchakarma (पञ्चकर्म) is the cornerstone of Ayurvedic medicine — a five-fold purification therapy that systematically cleanses the body of deep-rooted toxins known as Ama, restoring the natural balance of the three doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.

Dating back over 5,000 years to the Vedic era, Panchakarma is not merely a treatment but a complete science of renewal. Unlike symptomatic approaches, it addresses root causes by eliminating accumulated toxins from tissues, channels (srotas), and cells of the body.

The therapy comprises three phases: Purvakarma (preparatory procedures), Pradhanakarma (main five procedures), and Paschatkarma (post-treatment rejuvenation) — each precisely designed to guide the healing journey.

Practiced under the supervision of an experienced Ayurvedic physician, Panchakarma resets the body's innate intelligence, promoting longevity, clarity of mind, and profound vitality.

THE FIVE SACRED CLEANSINGS

The 5 Pillars of Panchakarma

Each Karma addresses a specific pathway of elimination, working together to create a comprehensive internal purification unmatched by other healing systems. Below we outline the five principal procedures, what to expect, and the key benefits.

Herbal decoction

Vamana — Therapeutic Emesis

Vamana is the controlled induction of therapeutic vomiting to remove excess Kapha and toxins from the upper gastrointestinal and respiratory channels. It is performed after preparatory therapies that loosen toxins, followed by medically supervised emetic administration.

Benefits

  • Clears respiratory congestions and chronic sinus issues
  • Helps in weight management and removes heavy Kapha toxins
  • Improves digestion and metabolic clarity
Herbal purgation herbs

Virechana — Purgation Therapy

Virechana uses herbal laxatives and purgatives to cleanse the middle and lower digestive tract and expel Pitta-related toxins. Performed under observation, it balances Pitta disturbances and clears the liver and gallbladder pathways.

Benefits

  • Detoxifies the liver and biliary channels
  • Reduces inflammation, acidity and Pitta imbalances
  • Supports clearer skin and improved digestion
Medicated oil enema

Basti — Medicated Enemas

Basti is regarded as the most powerful treatment for Vata disorders. It uses a series of medicated herbal oils, decoctions or ghee delivered rectally to cleanse and nourish the colon and systemic channels.

Benefits

  • Rebalances Vata and supports nervous system health
  • Improves elimination, digestion, and joint mobility
  • Useful for chronic pain, constipation and neurological concerns
Herbal nasal drops

Nasya — Nasal Administration

Nasya involves instilling specific herbal oils, ghee or medicated drops into the nostrils to clear and purify the head region. It is effective for head, neck and sensory organ conditions and is typically used as part of preparatory and post-therapeutic routines.

Benefits

  • Clears sinuses, relieves chronic nasal congestion and headaches
  • Enhances mental clarity and improves sense organ function
  • Supports voice, throat and upper respiratory health
Therapeutic bloodletting

Raktamokshana — Bloodletting / Detox

Raktamokshana is a controlled, therapeutic approach to remove vitiated blood when indicated — using safe, modern techniques under the supervision of an Ayurvedic physician. It is used for certain Pitta-related disorders and skin conditions.

Benefits

  • Helps in skin disorders, acute inflammations and Pitta excess
  • Reduces toxic load circulating in the bloodstream
  • Used selectively and with medical oversight for safety
“The goal of Ayurveda is to maintain the health of the healthy and heal the illness of the sick.”

Janu Basti

Knee Rejuvenation Therapy

Janu Basti is a specialised Ayurvedic knee therapy where warm medicated oil is retained within a dough dam placed precisely over the knee joint (Janu = knee, Basti = retaining). The warm oil bathes the knee in a sustained medicinal environment, penetrating deep into cartilage, synovial fluid, ligaments, and bone tissue.

The therapy provides remarkable relief from osteoarthritis, degenerative conditions, chronic knee pain, and post-surgical knee recovery. Regular sessions help rebuild joint lubrication and restore optimal mobility.

Kati Basti

Lower Back Oil Therapy

Kati Basti (Kati = lower back, Basti = to hold) is a potent Ayurvedic therapy for the lumbar region. A ring of dough is placed on the lower back, forming a well that is filled with warm, specially prepared medicated oil. The oil is maintained at a therapeutic temperature throughout the session.

Deeply penetrating into the vertebrae, muscles, and nerves, Kati Basti is one of the most effective treatments for chronic lower back pain, lumbar spondylosis, disc herniation, sciatica, and degenerative spinal conditions.

Jalaukavacharana — Blood Purification

Leech Therapy (Jalaukavacharana) is a cornerstone of Raktamokshana — the Ayurvedic blood purification procedure. Medical-grade leeches secrete over 100 bioactive compounds including Hirudin (anticoagulant), Hyaluronidase, and anti-inflammatory enzymes directly into the bloodstream during feeding.

This remarkable therapy draws out vitiated, toxin-laden blood from specific sites, improving local circulation and delivering potent healing compounds. It is particularly effective for non-healing wounds, varicose veins, skin disorders, and post-operative swelling.

Paralysis Therapy

Pakshaghat Chikitsa — Neuro-Rejuvenation

Paralysis Therapy in Ayurveda (Pakshaghat Chikitsa) is a comprehensive, multi-modal treatment protocol combining several Panchakarma procedures to address neurological paralysis caused by stroke, nerve damage, or degenerative conditions. Vata dosha is considered the primary causative factor in all forms of paralysis.

The protocol typically includes Abhyanga (full oil massage), Swedana (steam therapy), Basti (medicated enemas), Nasya (nasal administration), and Shirodhara (head oil stream) performed in a carefully designed sequence. These therapies restore nerve conduction, improve blood circulation to the affected areas, and stimulate muscle response.

Many patients experience significant improvement in motor function, muscle strength, speech, and coordination after a complete Panchakarma paralysis protocol spanning 21–28 days. Results are often remarkable when treatment begins within the first year of onset.
